A tragic incident has occurred again in Kwai Chung, where a solitary elderly person passed away unnoticed. This morning (Aug. 6), Housing Department staff went to a unit in Shing Yat House, Kwai Shing Estate, to search for a 78-year-old female resident who had been out of contact for some time. Upon arrival, they found skeletal remains sprawled on the bed.
Reports indicate that the calendar in the unit had stopped at the end of November 2023, and shopping receipts found inside suggested that the deceased had likely passed away around the same time, indicating that she had been dead for over a year and a half, with her remains reduced to bones on the bed. Police arrived to investigate and confirmed that the 78-year-old woman had died at the scene, subsequently calling for a coroner to take the body to the mortuary.
This marks the second incident this year involving a solitary elderly person found deceased at home, reduced to bones. On May 7, an 83-year-old man was discovered dead in his home at Shek On House in Kwai Chung. He had not collected social welfare since January and had been in arrears with rent since February. Security and Housing Department staff went to check on him, but as no one answered the door, they forced entry and found skeletal remains lying on the toilet. Neighbors reported that they had not seen the man for months and had not noticed any foul smell.
