On August 2, the Macao Health Bureau reported the second case of Chikungunya fever. Following an investigation, it was confirmed that this case is linked to earlier reports from the Mainland regarding workers at the construction site in Zone A of the new district. The patient was diagnosed locally in Macao and is considered the second local case of Chikungunya.
The patient is a 34-year-old female resident of Macao. On July 30, she began to experience a rash on her limbs, which continued, and on August 1, she developed a rash on her face and a fever. She sought medical attention at Kiang Wu Hospital on the same day. On August 2, tests conducted by the Public Health Laboratory confirmed a positive result for the Chikungunya fever. Her condition is currently stable, and she is hospitalized for isolation and treatment at the Conde S. Januário Hospital.
The Macao Health Bureau indicated that the patient traveled to Japan from July 13 to 21, during which mosquitoes did not bite her. From July 22 to 29, she worked at the construction site in Zone A, except for the afternoon of July 26 and the weekend of July 27. Considering the patient's work at the construction site and recent reports of multiple workers from Zhuhai testing positive for Chikungunya, the likelihood of infection during her time at the site is high. Based on her travel history, the timing of symptom onset, and laboratory results, she has been classified as the second local case of Chikungunya, linked to the previous cases reported from mainland China.
In response to the recent reports of multiple workers from Zhuhai testing positive for Chikungunya, the Macao Health Bureau held a cross-departmental coordination meeting and established a joint prevention and control team for the construction site to implement a series of measures. The construction site involved in the case was suspended for cleanup on July 30 and will only resume operations after an environmental review confirms improvements.
