Hong Kong has recorded its first imported case of chikungunya fever this year, involving a 12-year-old boy who had stayed in Foshan, Guangdong, for nearly two weeks last month.
The Department of Health urges the public to maintain strict anti-mosquito measures:
- Inspect and clear all gully traps, roof gutters, surface channels, and drains to prevent clogging.
- Scrub drains and surface channels with alkaline detergent at least once a week to remove potential mosquito eggs.
- Dispose of waste such as drink cans, bottles, and boxes properly in covered bins.
- Change water in vases and plant saucers completely every week, and avoid using saucers where possible.
- Level uneven ground before the rainy season to eliminate stagnant water.
- Install mosquito screens on windows and doors, or use mosquito nets/curtains indoors if necessary.
- Avoid staying in wooded areas where mosquitoes may breed.
- During outdoor activities, wear light-colored long-sleeved clothing and pants, and apply DEET-containing insect repellent on exposed skin and clothing.
Chikungunya fever is a mosquito-borne disease transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. The public should seek medical attention immediately if experiencing symptoms such as sudden high fever and severe joint pain, especially with a recent travel history.
