An 8.7 magnitude earthquake near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30 led to over 100 significant aftershocks, tsunami waves striking South America, and the highest-level tsunami warnings in Chile.
According to reports from CCTV News and Xinhua News Agency, a powerful 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30. Later the same day, a 6.5 magnitude aftershock occurred in the same region.
The Russian Academy of Sciences' Unified Geophysical Service reported that over 100 aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 or higher have been recorded since the initial quake. The seismic activity has triggered widespread tsunami warnings across South America and the South Pacific, with tsunami waves observed in multiple locations.
On July 30, Chile's disaster prevention and response center issued a red tsunami warning, urging residents along the coastal areas to evacuate to safer regions. The alert applies to the entire Chilean coastline, from the northernmost to the southernmost point. Videos circulating online show massive waves hitting Easter Island, Chile's westernmost territory, prompting evacuation orders for the island and other coastal areas.
Peru also updated its tsunami warnings on the same day and advised evacuation procedures ahead of the tsunami waves' arrival. Peru's emergency services reported that tsunami waves had already reached its coastline, with wave heights ranging from 0.78 meters to 1.86 meters.
In New Zealand, the National Emergency Management Agency issued another tsunami alert on the morning of July 31, confirming that tsunami waves had reached parts of New Zealand's waters. Residents were advised to stay away from beaches, ports, rivers, and estuaries, though no evacuation orders were issued for those on land.
Earlier on July 30, areas closer to the earthquake's epicenter along the Pacific coastline observed tsunami waves. Later that evening, Japan's Meteorological Agency downgraded its tsunami warnings to advisories, while the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center announced that the tsunami alert for Hawaii had been lifted.
