Chief Executive John Lee delivered an encouraging message to nearly 50,000 Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) candidates on the eve of their results release, emphasizing the value of their educational journey regardless of examination outcomes. Speaking at a press briefing, Lee reminded students that completing their secondary education already represents a significant personal achievement, with the knowledge gained and relationships formed during these six years constituting lifelong assets.

The Hong Kong leader outlined the multiple pathways available to graduates, noting that the city's education system offers over 22,000 government-funded and self-financing bachelor's degree places, sufficient for about half of this year's candidates. Additionally, 37,000 places are available in sub-degree programs and vocational training courses, with specialized options ranging from hospitality and culinary arts to construction trades. Lee particularly highlighted the international recognition of DSE qualifications, which are accepted by more than 1,000 institutions worldwide for those considering overseas study.

Stressing that "life is not a sprint but a journey with different phases," the Chief Executive encouraged students to view their results as merely one milestone in their ongoing development. He assured candidates of comprehensive government support through this transitional period, reminding them that various departments stand ready to guide their networks of family and friends. The message comes as last year's data showed 17,903 candidates meeting minimum university entrance requirements, with 15,857 ultimately securing publicly-funded undergraduate places.

Lee's address sought to alleviate the intense pressure surrounding DSE results by reframing success as a multifaceted concept, where vocational training and alternative education paths hold equal value to traditional academic routes. This perspective aligns with the government's ongoing efforts to diversify Hong Kong's education system and promote lifelong learning opportunities across different sectors of society.
