Renowned cultural icon and writer Chua Lam passes away at 83

Chua Lam, a celebrated figure in Hong Kong's cultural and entertainment scene, has passed away at the age of 83.

A message on his social media read: "Our beloved Mr. Chua Lam passed away peacefully at HK Sanatorium & Hospital on June 25, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. In accordance with his wishes and to avoid disturbing others, no ceremonies will be held. His remains have already been cremated. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who cared for Mr. Chua Lam."

Chua Lam was a multi-talented writer, filmmaker, gourmet, and television host. Along with Jin Yong, Ni Kuang, and James Wong, he was regarded as one of the "Four Talented Individuals of HK." He left a profound mark in various fields, including cinema, gastronomy, and literature.

At the age of 14, Chua published his first article in Nanyang Siang Pau. At 16, he traveled to Japan to study film, eventually working for Shaw Brothers Studio in Japan. He later wandered through New York, Seoul, India, and Nepal. In 1963, at the age of 22, he settled in HK as a production manager for Shaw Brothers Studio. Over a decade later, he became the vice president of Golden Harvest, where he oversaw the production of numerous Jackie Chan films.

In 1992, Chua co-hosted a talk show on Asia Television alongside Ni Kuang and James Wong, which caused a sensation. He later hosted several travel and food programs on TVB. With his unique insights into gastronomy and his humorous, engaging hosting style, Chua was deeply loved by the public.
