
Peter Chen, a legendary Taiwan singer-songwriter and record producer, passed away peacefully in Chengdu on June 14 at 9:46 a.m., according to a statement released by his son on June 17. He was 82 years old.
Born as Chen Xiaoyin, Peter Chen originated from Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, with ancestral roots in Chaoyang, Guangdong. He grew up in a military dependents' village in Taiwan and became a prominent figure in the Taiwan pop music industry.
According to CCTV, during an era dominated by sweet love songs in Taiwan, Chen boldly experimented by incorporating rock and other Western musical elements into Taiwan pop music, revolutionizing the industry. He was widely regarded as the "Godfather of Taiwan Pop Music."
Peter Chen's compositions created a phenomenon where one song could skyrocket an artist to fame. Fei Yu-ching rose to stardom with Chen's hits such as "Yi Jian Mei" (One Trim of Plum Blossom), "Jidu Xiyang Hong" (How Many Times the Sun Sets), and "Yi Tiao Lu" (One Path). Liu Wenzheng became a sensation across the Taiwan Strait with Chen's "Chi Dao" (You Come Too Late) and "Yi Duan Qing".
Chen himself gained widespread popularity for performing songs like "Ali Baba". At his peak, radio charts were dominated by Chen's works, with his songs occupying the top three spots.
