Protests have erupted across the US, and American politicians who previously criticized violent attacks in Hong Kong are now changing their rhetoric. In 2019, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described the violent protests in HK as a "beautiful sight to behold," even using terms like "courage" for the rioters. This statement was rebutted by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying, who remarked, I hope there are more such beautiful sight in the US.
Now, this boomerang has "hit" Pelosi and other politicians back. In response to protests in Los Angeles, Pelosi, a federal senator from California, has undergone a 180-degree change in attitude. During an event in Congress on the June 9, she no longer used the phrase "beautiful sight," instead calling for peaceful protests. She also posted on social media, accusing the Trump administration of escalating and provoking tensions in California and inciting violence.
