
An Air India Boeing 787 plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on June 12. Indian media outlet Firstpost reports, citing hospital sources, that the crash has resulted in 179 fatalities.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the tragedy as "heartbreaking beyond words" in a statement posted on the social media platform X.
"The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us all. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those impacted," Modi wrote.

According to the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation, the plane carried 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Among the passengers were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian citizen, as confirmed by Air India.
Indian media reports indicate that the crash occurred shortly after takeoff, with rescue workers recovering at least 30 bodies at the crash site so far. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue.
