An Air India flight carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on June 12, hitting a residential building in a densely populated area.
According to local media reports, the incident has resulted in 133 fatalities. Rescue personnel stated that at least 30 bodies of the victims have been found at the crash site.
Reports suggest that the Boeing 787-8 aircraft encountered a bird strike, which caused it to fail to achieve optimal takeoff speed, leading to the tragic accident.
According to eyewitnesses and video footage circulating online, the aircraft crashed into a dormitory of the prestigious B.J. Medical College, located just 5.8 kilometers from the airport. The impact caused a massive fire and thick plumes of smoke to rise over the area. Tragically, some medical students residing in the dormitory are reported to have died in the incident.
Air India confirmed that the flight, which departed Ahmedabad at 1:38 p.m. local time, was carrying 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese citizens, one Canadian citizen, and 12 crew members. Injured individuals have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Google Maps shows that the crash site is just a 13-minute drive from the airport, highlighting the aircraft's inability to gain altitude shortly after takeoff.
