In an interview with Al Jazeera, Singapore's senior diplomat Kishore Mahbubani criticized the chaotic nature of U.S. foreign policy. He was skeptical about Trump's ability to bring back manufacturing jobs to the United States, and doubted that the measures taken by the U.S. would lead other countries to distance themselves from China.
Mahbubani noted that while China has benefited from globalization, the U.S. has also gained from it. However, he believes that Trump's push to force factories to return to the U.S. is likely to be ineffective. He stated that China will suffer due to the trade war with the U.S., but it intends to exchange short-term pain for long-term benefits.
According to him, the chaotic U.S. policies are essentially gifts to China, and other countries will not distance themselves from China because of them.
Mahbubani also argued that U.S. sanctions and export controls against China are prompting China to accelerate its pursuit of technological self-reliance, indirectly strengthening its position. He suggested that more countries will come to recognize the necessity of engaging with China in terms of their own economic and strategic interests.
