On April 22, US President Donald Trump spoke to reporters in the Oval Office, admitting that the current maximum tariff rate on Chinese goods—145%—is simply too high. "145% is very high and it won't be that high. It will come down substantially, but it won't be zero," he said.
Trump stated that the US would approach negotiations with China in a very friendly manner and expressed confidence that China would adopt the same attitude.
