The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced today (March 18) an initiative aimed at regulating the release of data by automotive companies. The CAAM has noted that some automakers have been frequently publishing weekly sales rankings that do not accurately reflect market trends, with unclear data sources. This has led to public misinterpretations, disrupted industry order, and intensified unhealthy competition.

To maintain a healthy ecosystem in the automotive industry and guide it toward high-quality development, the CAAM has put forward the following initiatives to automotive companies in China:

  • Standardize Data Release to Maintain Industry Credibility: The CAAM advocates that companies stop publicly releasing weekly sales rankings to avoid fragmented information that can lead to misinterpretation. Companies are encouraged to release their operational data on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, in line with the operational patterns of the automotive industry, to ensure the stable functioning of the sector.
  • Promote Healthy Competition and Eliminate Improper Promotion: Companies should focus their promotional efforts on their own operational achievements, highlighting advancements in technology, product innovation, and service upgrades. They should avoid comparative statements and refrain from publishing rankings that could foster unhealthy competition. The goal is to shift the industry from a "data competition" model to one based on "service and value competition."

The CAAM urges all companies to actively respond to these initiatives and calls on third-party organizations and media to stop publishing weekly sales rankings. They should instead promote positive achievements in industry technology and green transformation, guiding the public to view market fluctuations rationally and resist the sensationalism of short-term data. This collective effort aims to cultivate a positive environment for industry development and promote high-quality growth in China's automotive sector.
