
As of the afternoon of Feb. 12, heavy snowfall across Japan has caused 12 fatalities in eight prefectures, according to reports from Asahi Shimbun. The snowstorm has also left 158 people injured in 15 prefectures, with conditions ranging from minor to severe injuries.
Niigata Prefecture reported three deaths, while Fukushima and Shimane each confirmed two fatalities. Yamagata and four other prefectures each recorded one death.
The severe winter weather also brought sudden blizzards and strong winds on Feb. 11, particularly affecting Hokkaido. The harsh conditions forced the cancellation of more than 90 flights at New Chitose Airport and Okadama Airport, marking the highest number of cancellations this winter. According to airline data, over 3,400 passengers were affected.
In addition to the flight disruptions, seven train lines were suspended, including the JR Hokkaido line that connects New Chitose Airport to Sapporo.
