Taiwan's star Barbie Hsu, known as "Big S," passed away at the age of 48 while celebrating the Lunar New Year with her family in Japan. Her death, caused by pneumonia complications from the flu, has prompted widespread mourning online. However, certain online accounts have been accused of spreading rumors and exploiting the tragedy for attention.
Chinese social media platform Douyin announced today (Feb. 8) that the accounts of Zhang Lan and Wang Xiaofei—Big S's former mother-in-law and ex-husband—have been indefinitely suspended. Douyin stated that it will continue to crack down on harmful behaviors, including the spread of false information, to maintain a healthy community environment. Reports and complaints of violations will be promptly investigated and addressed.
Among the banned accounts is "I am Xia Xiaojian," which previously claimed that Wang Xiaofei had chartered a private jet to ensure Big S's remains could "return home with dignity" instead of being transported like "cargo." The account also alleged that Wang Xiaofei's mother, Zhang Lan, liked and endorsed the post, seemingly to affirm the claims.
However, Big S's sister, Dee Hsu (commonly known as "Little S"), strongly denied the allegations through her agent, stating that all funeral arrangements, including transportation, were handled entirely by the Hsu family. She called the claim about Wang Xiaofei chartering a private jet "false."
According to Taiwanese media, friends of the Hsu family directly criticized Wang Xiaofei, accusing him of "outright lying." They revealed that the private jet expenses were actually borne entirely by Little S and her husband. Wang Xiaofei's actions were described as "utterly disgusting" for allegedly spreading false information online.
In addition, Zhang Lan faced criticism for her behavior on the day of Big S's death. Hours after news of the tragedy broke, Zhang Lan reportedly posted self-promotional content on her social media, marked with tags such as "Zhang Lan Live Broadcast." Chinese actress Mu Tingting condemned her actions as "shocking." Zhang Lan later deleted the post.
