The unexpected passing of Barbie Hsu, widely known as Barbie Hsu, has shocked the entertainment industry. Renowned for her breakout role in Meteor Garden, the late actress was also a savvy investor in Taipei's luxury real estate market. Now, her HKD 160 million worth of properties has become the center of public attention, with legal experts suggesting that her ex-husband, Wang Xiaofei, may be entitled to claim up to two-thirds of her inheritance.
Barbie Hsu's Properties in Taipei's Prime District
Barbie Hsu had a keen eye for real estate investments, particularly in the Xinyi District of Taipei, often likened to Hong Kong's Central District. She owned three luxury properties in the area, including a 7,900-square-foot unit in the Luxury Houses purchased in 2009 for TWD 210 million (HKD 58 million).
The Luxury Houses, which spans 8,424 square feet and includes four parking spaces, was purchased for TWD 360 million in 2016 (HKD 109 million). Although Wang Xiaofei funded the purchase, ownership was placed under Barbie Hsu's name due to Taiwan's residency restrictions on foreign nationals.
Potential Inheritance Claim by Wang Xiaofei
Under Taiwanese law, in the absence of a will, Barbie Hsu's estate is to be divided equally among her surviving spouse, DJ Koo (her current husband), and her two children. Each would inherit one-third of the estate. However, since her children are minors and share custody with their father, Wang Xiaofei, legal experts suggest that two-thirds of the inheritance may effectively be under Wang's control.
Complicating matters further is the Taipei Xinyi property, which was funded entirely by Wang Xiaofei but registered under Barbie Hsu's name. This raises questions about whether Wang has additional legal claims to the property.
Legal Complexities in Property Division
Taiwanese lawyers have highlighted that Koo could invoke the "Residual Property Distribution Principle," allowing him to claim half of the marital assets before the remaining estate is divided among the heirs. However, since Wang Xiaofei contributed the funds for the Taipei Xinyi property, this introduces additional complexities to the legal proceedings.
The ultimate division of Barbie Hsu's HKD 167 million estate remains uncertain and subject to legal clarification.
