The opening of Lunar New Year Fairs across cities in Guangdong has attracted numerous Hong Kong and Macao residents who travel north to purchase festive goods in preparation for the Spring Festival.
As one of the largest traditional folk events during the Spring Festival period in Guangdong Province, the Lunar New Year Fair holds deep cultural significance. Originating during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it remains a vibrant tradition in the Pearl River Delta region, as well as in Hong Kong and Macao.
In Guangzhou, the Lunar New Year Fair embodies the unique folkloric charm of Lingnan culture. Over time, it has become an essential part of the New Year celebrations for locals, offering a festive experience that blends tradition and modernity.
A Hong Kong visitor shared with Wen Wei Po that traveling to Guangdong for Lunar New Year Fairs, shopping for New Year's goods, enjoying festive dinners, and visiting friends and relatives across the border provides a distinctly different experience from celebrating in Hong Kong.
Local residents in Guangzhou also expressed their appreciation for the diverse offerings of the fair. "When I attend the Lunar New Year Fair, I can experience everything in one place: eating, sightseeing, shopping, entertainment, and relaxation," one resident said. The fair is filled with colorful stalls offering New Year flowers, mandarin orange plants, Fai Chun (traditional New Year calligraphy decorations), handmade crafts, festive foods, and other holiday essentials, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere.
The Lunar New Year Fair serves as a marketplace and a cultural hub where people gather to immerse themselves in the rich traditions of the Spring Festival.
