Health Department releases 2023 Health Behavior Survey Report
The Health Department of Hong Kong announced today (Jan. 23) the findings of the 2023 Health Behavior Survey Report, highlighting key health-related behaviors and lifestyle habits among residents. The report stresses the need for healthier lifestyles to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases.
Conducted from July to November 2023, the survey included over 4,800 participants aged 15 and above. Results showed that 14.8% of individuals aged 18 and over do not engage in sufficient physical activity, and 97% reported inadequate fruit and vegetable intake. Additionally, there was an increase in binge drinking among respondents.
The report noted a rise in colorectal cancer screenings among individuals aged 50 to 75, but a decline in cervical screenings for women aged 25 to 64.
A Health Department spokesperson urged the public to adopt healthier behaviors, including regular exercise, balanced diets, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol. The department also encouraged eligible individuals to participate in government-funded cancer screening programs.
Overall, the survey underscores significant gaps in healthy lifestyle practices among Hong Kong residents, and the department hopes for an active response to improve health outcomes.
