On July 21, 2019, former Hong Kong Legislative Council Member Lam Cheuk-ting and six others, who were involved in the riot case in Yuen Long, were charged with rioting. After more than 50 days of hearings, the District Court delivered a verdict on Dec. 12 last year, finding all defendants guilty of rioting. The defendants appeared in court today (Jan. 22) for sentencing, which is scheduled for Feb. 27.
The seven defendants were charged with one count of rioting, alleging that they participated in a riot at the MTR Yuen Long Station concourse on July 21, 2019.
During the plea for leniency, Lam's defense argued that his actions were not premeditated and that the incident was "purely accidental." The judge immediately rebutted, stating, "It may have started as an accident, but the subsequent actions were certainly not accidental. Do not claim that all responsibility is due to chance."
