
A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Chiayi County, Taiwan, at 12:17 a.m. on Jan. 21, triggering tremors felt across the island. The quake caused significant damage, including building collapses in Tainan City, where multiple people were temporarily trapped. According to fire department reports, at least 27 people were injured.
In Tainan's Nansi District, rescue crews freed more than 10 people from collapsed structures. In Chiayi County's Dapu Township, landslides blocked roads in Xixing Village, leaving approximately 50 residents stranded. Tainan Mayor visited the affected areas to comfort victims and declared a suspension of work and school in the district for the day.
