6.8-magnitude Xizang earthquake followed by 3,614 aftershocks, largest at 5.0 magnitude
On Jan. 7 at 9:05 a.m., a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in Shigatse City, Xizang, China. According to the latest update from the China Earthquake Networks Center, as of 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 14, a total of 3,614 aftershocks have been recorded.
The breakdown of aftershocks is as follows:
-Below 2.0 magnitude: 3,104 occurrences
-2.0–2.9 magnitude: 458 occurrences
-3.0–3.9 magnitude: 45 occurrences
-4.0–4.9 magnitude: 6 occurrences
-5.0–5.9 magnitude: 1 occurrence
-6.0 magnitude or above: None recorded
CCTV News reported that on the night of Jan. 13, Dingri County experienced two earthquakes within a span of two minutes, with the largest aftershock measuring 5.0 magnitude. This was the strongest aftershock recorded, and local residents strongly felt it.
