Protecting seniors during HK's cold spell: Association urges vigilance
Hong Kong's weather has turned colder, with the Hong Kong Observatory issuing the first cold weather warning of the year on January 9. This morning (Jan. 10), temperatures in many areas fell to 12°C or below, and the chilly weather is expected to persist in the early mornings over the next couple of days.
The Senior Citizen Home Safety Association's 24/7 support service, "Care-on-Call™," reported a sharp increase in emergency cases on January 9, with 1,861 calls—an increase of nearly 300 cases compared to the previous day. The primary reasons for hospital admissions included dizziness and falls.
As the elderly population often experiences reduced thermoregulation, sudden temperature drops can pose significant health risks. The association urges seniors to stay vigilant about weather updates and take appropriate measures to keep warm. Recommendations include drinking warm water, wearing adequate clothing, and maintaining light physical activity to enhance immunity.
Additionally, elderly individuals are advised to prioritize safety at home and outdoors, as winter conditions, reduced muscle strength, and heavy clothing can increase the risk of falls. If seniors feel unwell, they should seek medical attention promptly or contact the "Care-on-Call™" service for assistance.
The association also calls on the community to show concern for the elderly, particularly those living alone or in elderly households, by regularly checking on their living conditions and health and offering timely help when needed.
