Cold front brings freezing temperatures to HK: Frost likely in New Territories
A strong cold front has swept into Hong Kong, causing temperatures to drop significantly. The Hong Kong Observatory warns that the next two to three mornings will remain cold with urban areas seeing lows of 11–12°C, while some parts of the New Territories and higher altitudes will be "very cold." Frost formation is possible in sheltered and inland areas over the weekend.
In a blog post, the Observatory explained that a strong winter monsoon is currently affecting South China. The associated cold air mass has already reached northern South China, where temperatures have dropped by 2–3°C compared to yesterday (Jan. 8).
The Observatory further noted that under clear skies at night, significant radiative cooling will occur. Surface temperatures on exposed objects, such as leaves and car windshields, may dip below freezing. Frost may form as water vapor sublimates into ice crystals on these colder surfaces. Frost is more likely in sheltered areas or locations with lighter winds, where water vapor has sufficient time to condense onto cooler objects.
With the cold weather coinciding with a flu outbreak, the Observatory urges residents to stay warm and monitor updates from its weather forecasts. It also calls on the public to check on elderly or chronically ill individuals, offering assistance if needed.
