Four Golden Harvest theaters suspected to close down, Grand Ocean reduces screenings
The Hong Kong cinema industry faces another blow as four theaters under the Golden Harvest chain appear to be ceasing operations. According to the Golden Harvest website on Jan. 10, ticket sales for Stage E in Tuen Mun, Galaxy Plaza in Shau Kei Wan, The Sky at Olympian City, and Megabox are only available through today.
The iconic Grand Ocean, which has been a flagship location since its opening in 1969, will reduce its screenings to just one show per day starting Jan. 11. For the upcoming weekend, this single screening will feature the local film "Remember What I Forgot," starring Philip Keung and Fish Liew. A special event featuring the film's cast will take place at Grand Ocean on Jan. 11.
Of the four theaters facing closure, Galaxy Plaza in Shau Kei Wan has the shortest operational history, opening on May 18, 2021, and serving the Eastern District for just over three years. Grand Ocean, known for its signature extra-large screen and premium seating options—including 414 standard seats and 42 motion-enhanced D-BOX seats—will continue limited service, focusing on evening screenings.
Golden Harvest has been downsizing over the past year. In April 2024, the company announced the closure of its Kai Tak theater, and in December, its V Walk location in Nam Cheong suspended operations. After these latest developments, the Golden Harvest chain will retain only two theaters: Whampoa and Tai Po.
