At least seven cinemas in HK have closed in 2024 as MCL Cinemas Plus+ Plaza Hollywood ceases operations
The local film industry in Hong Kong is facing challenges, and cinemas are experiencing a wave of closures. The MCL Cinemas Plus+ Plaza Hollywood, which opened in 2022, was reported the night before last (Dec. 11) to have its final day of operation yesterday (Dec. 12) and to close starting today (Dec. 13). MCL has announced on its official website that the Hollywood Cinema will temporarily cease operations with immediate effect.
Yesterday's reports quoted staff members revealing that the cinema will not be operating from today onwards. Even the staff themselves only received the notice two days ago. There is still a possibility that another cinema chain may take over the operations.
The MCL Hollywood Cinema opened in July 2022, covering an area of 38,000 square feet, with a total of 6 theaters and approximately 1595 seats.
Including this cinema, a total of 7 cinemas in Hong Kong have closed this year. Additionally, the ACX Cinemas in North Point announced "internal renovations" at the end of October and suspended operations until further notice.
