On Jan. 9 local time, the state funeral of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was held at the Washington National Cathedral. President Biden and former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump attended the memorial service. Hundreds of people, including Carter's family, friends, and various U.S. officials, participated in the funeral.
After the service, Carter's body was transported back to his hometown of Plains, Georgia for burial.
Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, during which time he played a key role in establishing formal diplomatic relations between China and the United States. Additionally, he facilitated the signing of the significant Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, a milestone in the Middle East peace process. Following his presidency, Carter dedicated himself to philanthropic endeavors.
Carter passed away on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100.
