Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passes away at 100
On Dec. 29, U.S. media reported the passing of former President Jimmy Carter at the age of 100. Carter, who was the longest-living president in U.S. history, played a significant role in establishing diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China during his administration.
According to CCTV news, Carter died at his home in Georgia, with confirmation from his son, though the cause of death was not disclosed.
Jimmy Carter was elected as the 39th President of the United States in 1976. In recent years, he had been undergoing treatment for malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer. In a statement from the Carter Center in February 2023, it was announced that he had decided to stop further treatment after multiple hospitalizations and would spend his remaining time at home.
Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981, during which he facilitated the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China. He also played a key role in the signing of the Camp David Accords, which were significant for the Middle East peace process, leading to a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.
