According to Xinhua News Agency, the casket of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter arrived in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 7.
An Air Force One flight carrying Carter's casket took off from Atlanta, Georgia, in the morning and landed in the afternoon at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Following the arrival, the casket was transferred to a hearse and transported to the U.S. Navy Memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue in D.C. to honor Carter's service in the Navy.
Subsequently, the casket was moved by horse-drawn carriage to the U.S. Capitol, where Carter's remains were placed in the Capitol Rotunda. Public mourning began later that day. A state funeral is scheduled to take place at the Washington National Cathedral on Jan. 9.
