Rosanna Law: HK Coliseum to shift focus to entertainment performances after Kai Tak Sports Park opening

The Kai Tak Sports Park will be opened in the first quarter of this year. The main stadium will be able to accommodate up to 50,000 spectators, which is set to rewrite the use of large-scale venues in Hong Kong. The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Rosanna Law, said in a television program today (Jan. 5) that together with the expected completion of the East Kowloon Cultural Centre by the end of this year, and other new venues, will begin to review the positioning of the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom and other government-related venues.

Law said that in the past, there were not enough venues for sports and concert activities, but now there are more venues, the positioning of the Hong Kong Coliseum and other venues will be divided into areas of use. Although 59% of the events in the Hong Kong Coliseum last year were concerts and only 20% of the events were sports events, the Hong Kong Coliseum must give priority to sports activities.

Now that the Kai Tak Sports Park is in place, the positioning of different venues can be explored, for example, sports activities can be held mainly in some places, while other places can focus on entertainment performance, she said.

As for the sports venue in the Kai Tak Sports Park, the first test concert was held earlier and Law also attended the concert in person. Regarding the view of some audience that the sound system needs to be improved, she believes that it is not a hardware problem, but that it involves different performers and needs more time for preparation and coordination, and the government will continue to arrange for testing.
