The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) reported a suspected theft yesterday (Jan. 2), involving files that contain records of public complaints about environmental nuisances.

The incident, which affects the Kowloon City District Environmental Hygiene Office, involves two internal files that include the personal data of approximately 100 complainants, such as names, telephone numbers, and email addresses.

The FEHD has expressed its utmost concern regarding the matter. Given the sensitive nature of the information, the department has contacted all affected individuals to apologize and urge them to remain vigilant about potential misuse of their data.

The office in question is secured with a digital lock and an independent door lock. Due to the potential criminal nature of this incident, the FEHD has notified the Police and will fully cooperate with their investigation. Additionally, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data has been informed.

The FEHD emphasized its commitment to personal data security, stating that it has established internal guidelines and control mechanisms to comply with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance and other relevant laws. Staff members receive regular reminders to follow these protocols.

While the department considers this an isolated incident, it has pledged to take strict action if the investigation uncovers any negligence or mishandling by staff. The FEHD also plans to review its current personal data security measures to enhance the protection of the information it collects.
