Hong Kong is ramping up efforts to strengthen its position as a global innovation and technology hub, with a strong call for collaboration across society, especially from the business sector. Speaking on a radio program today (Dec. 28), Secretary for Innovation, Technology & Industry, Prof. Sun Dong, stressed that the key to I&T growth lies in transforming technology into productivity.
He pointed out that land and funding remain critical pain points, but the government is committed to addressing these challenges through innovative approaches. Sun announced plans to launch pilot projects to attract research and development companies to set up production lines in HK. These initiatives aim to generate measurable economic value for the city.
The government has unveiled the Development Outline for Hong Kong Park of Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone. The goal is to position the park as a world-class platform for academia, research, and industry collaboration, with a focus on key fields such as life and health sciences, and artificial intelligence (AI). According to Sun, the park aims to welcome both industry-leading enterprises and startups.
Sun also outlined the distinct roles of HK's three major I&T parks. Cyberport will focus on AI and digital transformation, the Science Park will serve as a comprehensive innovation hub, and the I&T Park in the Lok Ma Chau Loop will act as an integration platform between HK and the Greater Bay Area.
