Milestone diplomatic anniversary: Malaysia, China forge green energy partnerships
This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia. The Leadership Conference, Malaysia-China Summit 2024, with the topic of "Government Strategies for Sustainable Development: Driving the Energy Transition and Enhancing National Resilience" by The Hon. Akmal Nasrullah Mood Nasir, the Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Malaysia, was held on Wednesday (Dec. 18).
At the conference, he said that Malaysia's targets are achieving 70% renewable energy in the installed capacity mix by 2050 while positioning itself as a regional leader in clean energy solutions.
He pointed out that as Malaysia accelerates its sustainable development agenda, partnerships remain central to its success. He has been rather impressed by China's efforts in advancing its energy transition within the framework of its new economic development.
"According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), China has achieved significant milestones, with renewable energy capacity expanding at an approximate annual rate of 12%, and the number of electric vehicles on the road growing by roughly 20% each year. These efforts offer Malaysia a chance to learn and adopt best practices for fair and equitable energy transition, aligning with the National Energy Transition Road map," he said.
When talking about the collaboration with China, he revealed that China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd plans to introduce methanol-driven vehicles to the Malaysian market.
"The world's largest producer of methanol vehicles aims to provide cleaner mobility solutions, with Malaysia serving as a technological hub for Southeast Asian automobile manufacturers. This collaboration is expected to accelerate the development and production of methanol vehicles in Malaysia."
As for the oil and gas sector, last month (November 2024), Malaysia and China signed a Memorandum of Understanding, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and renewable energy. He said the collaboration encompasses green hydrogen technology and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), reflecting a commitment to collectively meet the global demand for sustainable energy development in such an important economic sector.
