On Dec. 5 local time, South Korean prosecutors banned former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun from leaving the country on suspicion of "sedition."
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol issued a state of emergency on the evening of Dec. 3, which was lifted in the early hours of Dec. 4. Several South Korean media outlets reported that the recommendation to impose a state of emergency came from Kim to Yoon, as per sources within the South Korean Ministry of Defense.
On Dec. 4, Kim stated that the state of emergency had caused confusion and anxiety among the public. As the Defense Minister, he felt a great sense of responsibility and apologized. Kim expressed his accountability for all matters related to the state of emergency and tendered his resignation to the President.
