Ex-principal of G.T. (Ellen Yeung) College's junior primary section dies ahead of court appearance over HK$10mn embezzlement case
This morning (Dec. 4), Jo Nip Man, the former principal of G.T. (Ellen Yeung) College's primary section, was pronounced dead after falling from a building in Kwai Chung's Lai Yiu Estate, according to local authorities.
Nip was due to appear at the Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court later the same day, facing charges of embezzling over HK$10 million in school funds.
Police received a report at 8:59 a.m. about a middle-aged man standing outside the railings of a corridor in Lai Yiu Estate, appearing to be preparing to jump. At 9:06 a.m., security personnel reported that the man had fallen into the courtyard.
Paramedics arrived and rushed the 46-year-old to Princess Margaret Hospital, but he was later pronounced dead. A suicide note was recovered at the scene, in which Nip expressed feeling immense pressure from the ongoing legal case and proceedings.
Nip was accused of misappropriating school funds during his tenure as principal of G.T. (Ellen Yeung) College's primary section from 2018 to 2021.
The school filed a civil lawsuit in the High Court, accusing Nip of fraud and unjust enrichment. The school also sought repayment of the embezzled funds, totaling approximately HK$10.6 million, plus interest and damages.
