Cathay Pacific Tokyo-HK flight reports suspected hydraulic failure, north runway temporarily closed
A Cathay Pacific flight returning from Tokyo to Hong Kong experienced a suspected hydraulic system failure early this morning (Nov. 26). The pilot alerted Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), prompting a partial emergency response by airport fire services. The flight landed safely at approximately 1:30 a.m., with no injuries reported. The aircraft remained on the north runway for over half an hour, during which the runway was closed, and other flights were diverted to the south runway.
The flight in question, CX501, departed from Narita International Airport in Tokyo around 10:00 p.m. local time on Nov. 25. The aircraft, an Airbus A350-1000 (registration number B-LXA), encountered the issue shortly before arriving in HK.
At around 1:00 a.m. local time, the pilot reported a suspected hydraulic system malfunction to HK air traffic control. In response, the airport implemented a "partial emergency standby." CX501 successfully landed on HKIA's north runway (07L) at 1:33 a.m.
Due to the suspected malfunction, the aircraft was unable to taxi off the runway immediately. Fire and airport vehicles were deployed to inspect and secure the area. The aircraft eventually vacated the runway at around 2:00 a.m., allowing normal operations to resume. During the temporary closure of the north runway, all other flights used the south runway (07R) for take-offs and landings.
