HK universities shine in global rankings: A step towards becoming an international education hub
Hong Kong continues to make strides in its ambition to become a global hub for higher education, an international innovation center, and a vibrant events capital. According to the latest 2024 World First-Class Discipline Rankings released by ShanghaiRanking, local universities have achieved remarkable success, setting two significant records: The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has topped the global list in Tourism and Leisure Management for the eighth consecutive year, while the City University of Hong Kong has claimed the top spot in Library and Information Science.
Academic Excellence
The Polytechnic University and City University are the highest-performing institutions in Hong Kong, with 21 and 19 disciplines, respectively, ranked among the world's top 50. Notably, they have five and three disciplines in the global top ten. With five other universities, Hong Kong boasts 76 disciplines in the world's top 50 and 33 in the top 20, showcasing its exceptional academic and educational standards.
Launched in 2017, the ShanghaiRanking World First-Class Discipline Rankings assess over 5,000 universities worldwide, covering 55 disciplines across major fields such as natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine, and social sciences. The rankings utilize objective academic indicators based on five evaluation criteria: faculty quality, academic performance, research output, and international collaboration.
Diverse Fields of Study
The recent release of the 2024 rankings highlights that seven universities in Hong Kong have a total of 76 disciplines in the world's top 50, with 33 in the top 20 and nine in the global top ten. This includes key areas such as science, engineering, healthcare, management, finance, and education, further enhancing Hong Kong's reputation for higher education excellence.
The Polytechnic University stands out among local universities, with 21 disciplines in the world's top 50, eight in the top 20, and five in the top 10. Its Tourism and Leisure Management program has been the world leader since the ranking's inception in 2017. The university ranks second worldwide in Civil Engineering and Transportation Engineering, fourth in Management, and seventh in Textile Science and Engineering.
City University follows closely, with 19 disciplines in the top 50, eight in the top 20, and three in the top 10. Its Library and Information Science program is also ranked first globally. At the same time, Public Administration and Energy Science and Engineering hold the eighth and ninth positions, respectively, with a total of 14 disciplines ranked as the best in Hong Kong.
Notable Achievements in Medicine
The University of Hong Kong has 16 disciplines in the top 50, with eight in the top 20, the highest being Finance, ranked tenth globally. Meanwhile, the Chinese University of Hong Kong has excelled in clinical medicine, achieving the fourteenth position worldwide and becoming the top medical school in Asia. Its Nursing program ranks second in Asia and twenty-third globally. Chinese University has 11 disciplines in the top 50, with the highest being Biomedical Engineering at eleventh.
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has seven disciplines in the top 50, two in the top 20, the highest being Energy Science and Engineering and Transportation Engineering, both ranked twentieth. The Education University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University also have disciplines in the top 50, with Education ranked thirteenth and Library and Information Science ranked twenty-first globally.
