1-minute News | Fading away: Studying at UK loses its magic in China
Since 2022, following a relaxation of policies, the number of Chinese students studying in the UK reached unprecedented levels. However, in just two years, studying in the UK has started to lose its appeal.
According to the UK's latest statistics, the number of student visa approvals in 2024 for students from mainland China also fell by 434 compared to the previous year, marking the second consecutive year of decline.
The decline in interest in UK education is due to a combination of discouraging factors, with the rising costs being the most significant. Besides increase in tuition, other expenses related to studying in the UK have also surged.
Also, as UK universities expand enrollments, issues such as inflated expectations and questionable quality have begun to emerge.
Currently, most master's programs in the UK are one year in duration. The shorter timeframe seems efficient, but the downside is that the brevity raises doubts about the quality of learning achieved within that year.
When costs rise and quality becomes difficult to guarantee, it is not surprising that Chinese students are starting to shift their choices.
