Three new undergraduate programs launched by CUHK

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) announced today (Oct. 17) that it will launch three new undergraduate programs in the 2025-26 academic year to meet the growing demand for diverse talents in society. Through these innovative programs, the university aims to cultivate individuals with forward-looking perspectives and professional skills, enabling them to take on leadership roles in a rapidly changing global environment.

The three new programs are as follows:

Public Humanities

It integrates the critical skills of Cultural Studies and practical know-how of Cultural Management, focusing not only on research and theories, but also on cultural practices, knowledge transfer, and public engagement. It aim to nurture a new generation of cultural mediators, producers, and professionals to meet the needs and challenges of contemporary society. It also aim to transform cultural practices for better community building.

This program fosters students' critical and creative thinking, and deepens their understanding of culture, heritage, and the arts; it also enhances their ability to communicate and collaborate with the public. It will train students in research skills, cultural sensitivity, media literacy, curating, and policy-making, bringing the knowledge and values of the humanities into the cultural life of the general public. It will also also promote global citizenship and civic participation, and support the sustainable development of various cultural enterprises in society.

Human Movement Science and Health Studies

The program is a four-year full-time degree program, aiming to provide an interdisciplinary learning experience to students who are interested in the scientific and medical aspects of human movement, coaching, health and rehabilitation, as well as research-oriented activities in academia.

Two highly linked areas characterize it. Human Movement Science explores the causes and consequences of human movement across one's lifespan, including the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic conditions that cause movement disorders. Health Studies cover how to develop and apply principles of exercise-based preventative intervention, management of health and well-being, and rehabilitation to individuals who are injured or physically impaired (e.g., disability, chronic disease).

The Department of Sports Science and Physical Education offers an option for local students admitted to the Bachelor of Science (Human Movement Science and Health Studies) Program to apply for participating in a dual degree program (DDP) with Beijing Sports University.

Students will study for 2 years at CUHK and BSU, respectively, and will obtain a bachelor's degree from each of the two institutions upon completing the graduation requirements.

Materials Science and Engineering

The program is intended to be untraditional and forward-looking to anticipate the future needs in targeted technology areas. It aims to provide comprehensive education on scientific knowledge and engineering skills across multiple disciplines related to advanced materials and their innovative applications. Observing the high demand for scientists and engineers in the areas of advanced materials, the MASE major curriculum emphasizes on emerging materials with new functions, including nanomaterials, energy materials, electronic materials, smart materials, biomaterials, etc.
