Chief Executive orders immediate containment as nine monkeys die at Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens
On October 13, eight monkeys at Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens (HKZBG) were found dead under unexplained circumstances. Another monkey died on the morning of October 14, and a De Brazza's monkey has shown abnormal behavior. Park authorities have intensified monitoring efforts.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu addressed the incident on October 15, emphasizing the need to contain the problem to prevent further escalation.
Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism Kevin Yeung held an emergency inter-departmental meeting to expedite autopsy and toxicology tests to determine the cause of the deaths.
Lee outlined three key actions to address the situation: First, containment measures to prevent the spread of the problem, including the quarantine and disinfection of the affected areas. Second, enhanced monitoring and protective measures for staff. Third, prompt identification of the cause through autopsies and independent analysis to provide targeted solutions.
Yeung will oversee the coordination efforts, and any updates will be promptly communicated to the public.
