
Sam Hou Fai was elected as the sixth Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) on Sunday (Oct. 13), securing the position with a significant majority. After the election, Sam Hou Fai held a media briefing, discussing the future of Macao's relations with Hong Kong and its role in the Greater Bay Area.
Sam Hou Fai expressed his belief that the economic and trade ties between Macao and Hong Kong are strong, with the two regions working closely in commerce, taxation, and law.
He emphasized that both Macao and Hong Kong can leverage their advantages to promote the development of the Greater Bay Area and contribute to China's overall growth. Additionally, he mentioned the potential for future cooperation between Hong Kong, Macao, and Southeast Asian countries.
Macao's Integration into National Development and Participation in the Greater Bay Area
Sam Hou Fai reiterated that Macao is an inseparable part of China and shares its destiny with the nation. Over the past 25 years since its return to China, Macao has successfully implemented the "One Country, Two Systems" policy, achieving significant progress in politics, the economy, society, and public welfare.
He stressed the importance of Macao fully integrating into China's national development strategy while utilizing its unique characteristics and strengths. He also underlined Macao's role in the Greater Bay Area, particularly in enhancing regional economic and tourism exchanges.
Improving Governance Efficiency and Addressing Livelihood Issues
Sam highlighted the public's call for improved governance efficiency during the press conference. He committed to building a proactive and effective government that meets the needs of its citizens.
Sam also revealed that he had collected over 2,200 suggestions from residents during his campaign, which will be categorized and submitted to his new team for research and planning.
He emphasized his focus on addressing issues such as urban renewal, public housing, and improving conditions for the middle class. Specifically, he aims to create successful models for urban redevelopment to enhance living environments. In terms of business development, he plans to guide small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in adopting new ideas and expanding into digital markets.
Deepening Cooperation with Mainland China and Expanding International Relations
Sam stressed the importance of Macao actively participating in the high-quality development of the Greater Bay Area.
On the international front, Sam Hou Fai highlighted the success of the China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform, which has been in operation for 21 years with support from the Macao SAR government. He hoped Macao would continue to utilize its unique position to foster deeper cooperation with Portugal and fully leverage its role in facilitating China-Portugal trade. He noted that this strategic positioning reflects the central government's recognition of Macao's unique advantages.
