Unacceptable bare legs: Parent irritated after British school requires students to wear shorter socks

Many schools in the UK have strict dress codes, and opinions on these rules can vary widely. Recently, Irlam and Cadishead Academy in Salford, England, implemented a new dress code requiring female students to wear black ankle socks instead of knee-length black socks, a change that has sparked backlash from parents, with some even withdrawing their children from the school.

According to international media reports, the school previously required female students to wear knee-length black socks. However, the school recently revised its dress code, mandating that all female students switch to black ankle socks, which are shorter in length than their previous ones.

A school spokesperson stated that the decision was made after careful consideration and was based on feedback from the majority of female students.

However, many parents were unhappy with the change and questioned that this decision did not represent the majority of girls.

If they got more than 100 signatures on a petition, girls would be allowed to wear the ankle socks. If that's the case there are 360 female students at that school, so it's not a majority by any stretch of the imagination, Wendy Allsop, the mother of a girl at the school said.

She expressed concerns over the safety of the new dress code. "It's the fact they haven't considered that you've got young girls aged 11 to 16 walking to and from school literally exposed from above the knee to their ankles early in the morning. These girls need to be protected," she said.

She added, "You're also going to have new starters in Year 7 feeling pressured into shaving their legs and probably cutting themselves."

Wendy has now asked the school to deregister her daughter and has already enrolled her girl at a new school.
