My only way out: Hongkonger decides to return after two stressful years in UK
In recent years, a significant number of Hongkongers have moved to the UK. However, many of them have struggled to adapt to the weather, lifestyle, and cultural differences, leading to mental health issues, including depression.
Some people have decided to return to HK. Recently, a HK woman who had lived in the UK for two years revealed that her mental health had deteriorated to the point of developing facial paralysis due to overwhelming stress, prompting her decision to return.
The woman shared her story on the social media platform Threads, stating that she had been in the UK for two years and had gone through several challenging life events, including the loss of her dog, the birth of her baby, health warnings, and quitting her job.
She had been living with depression, frequently breaking down in tears for no apparent reason and feeling constantly anxious. "I felt trapped, like I was living in a dream while walking down the street, trying to hold on, but each day felt like a year," she wrote.
Although she kept reminding herself not to return and to stay for the sake of her child's future, her situation worsened last month when she woke up to find one side of her face paralyzed, unable to move. Even her right eye couldn't close while sleeping. After seeking medical attention, she was diagnosed with Belly’s Palsy.
The accumulation of these stressors solidified her decision to return to HK. I know I have to start over, and I've prepared myself for what others around me might say, from my perspective, going back isn't a choice—it's my only way out, she said.
The post sparked widespread discussion online, with many expressing support for her decision. However, some netizens also encouraged her to stay longer in the UK for the sake of her child's education.
