The Hong Kong chain fitness center PHYSICAL Fitness & Beauty suddenly announced the temporary closure of all branches on Sept. 6.  Except for significant losses for consumers, over a hundred fitness trainers and beauticians said that the company owes them unpaid wages and contributions to the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF). The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority filed a lawsuit in the High Court yesterday (Sept. 16) to recover a total of HK$3.374 million from PHYSICAL Fitness & Beauty.

According to the statement of claim, the defendant failed to make MPF contributions and additional fees for employees for June and July of this year, for which the claim for HK$3.374 million has been filed.

The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority stated on Sept. 11 that PHYSICAL Fitness & Beauty has not made MPF contributions and additional fees for about 740 employees for the period from June to August of this year, amounting to approximately HK$4.8 million, according to the latest information.
