Watch This | Super typhoon Bebinca strikes Shanghai, creating apocalyptic scene
Super Typhoon Bebinca landed in Shanghai's Pudong New Area around 7:30 AM today (Sept. 16), with maximum winds of level 14 (42 m/s) near the center and a minimum central pressure of 955 hPa.
Bebinca has surpassed Typhoon "Gloria" (No. 4906) to become the strongest typhoon to hit Shanghai since 1949.
As Bebinca approached, the Huangpu River was turbulent, and the skies over the Bund were ominously dark, resembling an apocalyptic scenario. The Shanghai Tower's massive dampers swayed continuously in the storm, and parts of building façades were blown off, nearly hitting pedestrians. Traffic police braved the elements, with flashing lights ready for emergency responses.
The Central Meteorological Administration continued to issue a red alert for the typhoon today, and all highways within Shanghai were closed. Operations at Pudong Airport and Hongqiao Airport resumed after 2 PM. Some passenger trains on routes like the Hangzhou-Taipei High-Speed Railway and the Shanghai-Kunming High-Speed Railway were suspended.
After making landfall in Shanghai, Bebinca is expected to move inland, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to regions including Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui, with some areas experiencing torrential downpours.
