Over 600 flights canceled in Shanghai due to typhoon Bebinca

Typhoon Bebinca will make landfall early tomorrow morning in the area from Pudong, Shanghai to Zhoushan, Zhejiang. (HKO)

The Central Meteorological Observatory of CMA has issued an orange typhoon warning, forecasting that typhoon Bebinca will land early tomorrow morning in the area from Pudong, Shanghai, to Zhoushan, Zhejiang. The typhoon could reach typhoon or severe typhoon strength, potentially making it the strongest Mid-Autumn typhoon to hit China since 2016.

Shanghai and Hangzhou have issued notices advising residents to avoid unnecessary outings during the typhoon. Shanghai has escalated its typhoon emergency response to the highest level, and more than 9,300 people have been evacuated in Chongming District for safety.

As of noon today (Sept. 15), over 600 flights have been canceled at Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao airports, with Ningbo Airport also canceling over a hundred flights.

The National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center (NMEFC) warns that the typhoon's landfall coincides with a spring tide and the Mid-Autumn holiday, likely leading to a convergence of high winds, waves, and tides. Coastal areas in northern Zhejiang and near Shanghai are expected to experience waves from four to six meters high, with the coastal areas along the north shore of the Yangtze River mouth and Hangzhou Bay potentially facing storm surges of up to 220 cm. The public and local governments are advised to prepare for potential flooding in low-lying areas.

According to the website of the Airport Authority Hong Kong, as of 3 p.m., 16 flights from Hong Kong to either Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao have been canceled, along with 7 arrivals to Hong Kong from these airports. For the latest flight information, please visit the official website of Hong Kong International Airport.
