WeChat launches palm-scanned payment in Macao
Tencent's WeChat has introduced palm-based payment in Macao, marking its first deployment of the "palmprint + palm vein" recognition technology outside mainland China.
This service will cover over 60 merchants within the Galaxy Entertainment owned Galaxy Macao initially. It primarily serves users who have already activated mainland WeChat Wallet and palm payment, allowing them to complete transactions even when their phones are unusable due to low battery or malfunctions.
Wayne Chen Zhangwei, general manager of Weixin Pay Cross-Border Business for Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, stated that the expansion of usage scenarios will depend on demand, including extending these services to Hong Kong.
Chen highlighted that this technology facilitates convenience for users and enhances merchant operational efficiency. For instance, the borrowing of portable chargers has simplified the process from four steps to two; in campus dining, service efficiency has improved by over 60%; and the user repeat rate in several scenarios exceeds 70%.
Kai Xia, head of Weixin Pay Hardware Innovation, added that the "palmprint + palm vein" technology allows users to complete payments without touching the device. This technology employs a banking-grade security solution, and the significant variation among individuals' palmprints makes it technically challenging and costly to replicate another user's palmprint, ensuring the security of the technology.
