More than 2,100 homes in Chiba Prefecture were still without power in the early hours of the morning as Typhoon Ampil approached Japan's Kanto and Tohoku regions today (Aug. 17). At least seven people were injured in the Kanto region, including three in a car accident in Fukushima Prefecture, while others fell or were injured by doors caught in the strong winds.

On the transport front, the Tokaido Shinkansen resumed full operation today. ANA and Japan Airlines canceled about 650 flights at Haneda and Narita airports yesterday, affecting about 120,000 passengers, and are expected to cancel about 70 flights today.

In addition, JR East Japan Railway Company said that the two-way trains from Tokyo Station to Nagoya Station on the Tokaido Shinkansen, which were suspended yesterday, resumed normal operation today.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that as of 3:00 a.m., Ampil was 170 kilometers east of Chōshi, Chiba Prefecture, moving north-northeast at 20 kilometers per hour, with rain intensifying in some areas. The Kanto and Tohoku regions are expected to have heavy rainfall today, and on the northeast Pacific side, rainfall in the Kanto region is expected to reach 100mm.
