Attention please! Shinkansen and flights to be affected by Typhoon Ampil tomorrow

Attention! Typhoon Ampil, the 7th typhoon of this year, strengthened from a severe tropical storm to a typhoon yesterday (Aug. 14), and is expected to gradually increase in strength and trend towards the southeastern part of Honshu in Japan.

The Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) announced that the Tokyo to Nagoya section of the Tokaido Shinkansen will be closed all day tomorrow (Aug. 16), and Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) also announced that more than 470 domestic flights will be canceled on Aug. 16.

JR Central: Part of the Tokaido Shinkansen to be suspended for whole day on Aug. 16

According to JR Tokai, the Tokyo to Nagoya section of the Tokaido Shinkansen will be closed all day tomorrow; the Nagoya to Shin-Osaka section will be reduced in frequency according to a temporary schedule, and all trains will be operated on a free seat basis; and the Sanyo Shinkansen will be closed all day. In addition, depending on weather conditions, trains may be suspended or delayed on Aug. 17.

JR-East: Some Shinkansen routes expected to be canceled or significantly delayed

JR-East announces that from around noon until the evening of Aug. 16, the Tohoku, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Akita and Yamagata Shinkansen may be canceled or significantly delayed.

JR East will announce the information within today if there are any planned suspensions, so visitors can pay attention to the relevant announcements.

Hundreds of domestic flights canceled

Japan Airlines (JAL) announced that due to the storm approaching the Kanto region, 217 flights from Haneda and Narita airports will be canceled on the 16th, including both domestic and international flights.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced that about 280 flights will be canceled on Aug. 16, mainly from Haneda and Narita airports, which is expected to affect 64,000 people.

Both airlines are urging travelers to check their flights regularly for the latest information.
