Next week's Perseid meteor shower: Space Museum to broadcast live, explain observations
The Perseid meteor shower is one of the three major meteor shower phenomena each year. According to the Hong Kong Space Museum, the peak viewing period for the meteor cluster is the night of August 12, when the zenith hourly occurrence rate reaches 100, while on August 13 from 3 to 4 a.m., the museum expects that there will be a chance of 15 meteors appearing per hour during the peak period in the remote rural areas of Hong Kong.
According to the Hong Kong Space Museum, there will be eight opportunities to observe meteor showers in Hong Kong in 2024, and this Perseid meteor shower is the fifth this year. Its active period is from July 17 to August 24, with its peak on August 12, Hong Kong time. The recommended viewing period is from 11 p.m. next Monday to 5 a.m. the following morning.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board recommends four locations for stargazing: Tai Tung Shan, Shek O, West Dam of High Island Reservoir and Main Dam of Tai Mei Tuk.
In addition, the Space Museum will broadcast the meteor shower live on the Internet, providing real-time information on how to watch the meteor shower and astronomy.
