The mid-terms are the twilight of the Trump presidency.
Finally, after two years on the Trump roller-coaster, the ride is screeching to a halt. The blue wave sweeping both the Senate and the House has washed up the jaw-dropping results.
This election ends with a few firsts in US politics: the first black Speaker of the House, the first Muslim in the Senate, the first black governor in Georgia and the first gay senator from New Hampshire. But the outcome is a seismic shift that has a much larger meaning than a change of political players.
This election divides the world into two camps: those who celebrate and those who hyperventilate.
In the first camp, Putin is crying into his vodka, as he loses Trump’s sycophantic support. J.D. Vance, the VP waiting in the wings, is crying into his beer as his hopes of becoming the next occupant of the White House are dashed to pieces. Then there is Elon Musk. Having poured an obscene $366 million into propping up Republican candidates, it is money down the drain. The big wads of cold hard cash have delivered nothing but dismal results. Into the bargain, Musk now faces House investigation into his shenanigans when he briefly took the helm at the Department of Government Efficiency.
Looming large are the Epstein files that may seal Trump’s fate. The Republican-controlled House has, until now, blocked the full release of the files, with only 3.5 million of the 6 million files made public, many of them heavily redacted. Epstein might be dead, but his ghost is haunting US politics, his filthy files a ticking time bomb for his former playmates, notably, Trump among them.
Another man in the Trump orbit having sleepless nights is Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of War. He is squarely in the democratic crosshairs for his weird conduct, including firing respected generals left and right.
Netanyahu’s days are numbered as he loses a gullible US president doing his bidding. Trump has been tricked into the quagmire of a pointless war in Iran which has cascaded into heavy Republican electoral losses.
Trump looks pathetic, an 80-year-old in cognitive decline, made worse by his dramatic decline in power. An unprecedented third impeachment lurks. His presidency is considered the most corrupt with shameless self-enrichment. This year alone, he has made himself richer by over a billion dollars. His son and son-in-law are both legitimate targets for Congressional investigation into their corrupt practices.
Trump the spoiled brat is getting a hard spanking. If Epstein doesn’t sink him, his many nefarious money-making schemes will.
But a question is hanging over Natalie Harp, a hyper-loyal Trump aide who sticks to his ass at all hours like a piece of chewing gum. With Trump politically castrated, will she find him resistible, and drop off like a piece of dry scab?
Those in the other camp are clinking glasses. Iran can see the light at the end of the long military tunnel. Zelensky, publicly humiliated by Trump, must be gloating over the latter’s scrotum-shriveling political demise. He can now stare down Trump, without kowtowing to Putin.
Canada’s Carney is another happy man. He no longer needs to cross swords with Trump over his ridiculous idea of turning Canada into America’s 51ststate. He may soon kiss goodbye to tit-for-tat tariffs with his ill-tempered neighbor.
Trump has called Norway a shithouse country for repeatedly denying him his coveted Nobel Peace Prize. Today, Norwegian toilets smell invitingly good. Thanks to Trump, they have become another tourist attraction foreign visitors can’t say no to.
Other foreign leaders choked by tariffs must be smiling from ear to ear. Trump has wielded the tariff sledgehammer indiscriminately across the world. That toxic power is being throttled and bottled.
With control of both houses gone, Trump is like a drowned rat. His future appointments will be blocked, his misconduct investigated and the Epstein files unleashed. On day one, Democrats will gun for his third impeachment.
Chuck Schumeer, the minority senate leader, has promised Americans that “relief is on the way.”
But Americans need more than relief. They need a total repudiation of the Trump follies on multiple fronts.
On election night, Trump stupidly told US voters to “pretend that I am on the ballot”. They did. Magically, they turned the mid-terms into a referendum on his administration, warts and all.
This is thus a personal drubbing for a marked man with a big ego and a small mind. They are telling him, loud and clear, that enough is enough. They are policing his playpen.
Never have American mid-term elections been more consequential. Hillary Clinton has warned that Trump could become more dangerous if he loses the mid-terms. I disagree. The final two years will be more frightening if Trump prevails. Unchecked, his wild rampage will find new targets and victims, with the affordability crisis out of control, and the world out of kilter. Decency is gone. Division is in vogue, with US politics gripped by fear and loathing, and ICE as a domestic force of terror for a jittery public.
Trump, the traitor, calls himself the best American president Israel ever has in 99 years. Maybe the Jews will now welcome him to his new homeland among God’s chosen people. But they must first learn to live with his lies, street-swearing, wife-cheating and tax-cheating.
Trump’s stranglehold on his base is mythical, we now know. He stands utterly alone, rejected, and spat out. A lame duck is quacking in the new polluted reflecting pool. The world no longer feels sorry for itself. Decency is back and clucking.
